Movie Placement
The Origins of Product Placement
roduct placement has been making quite a few appearances on TV -- not to mention in video games and even books. One of the oldest forms of product placement is the movie business. Everyone remembers Humphrey Bogart's trench coat in Casablanca. More recently you may remember Aston Martin as the car of choice in several James Bond films.
Movie placement was the first mass media usage for product placement but it has a few drawbacks. First, the characters are fictional which somewhat diminishes the power of the celebrity association as the public realizes the celebrities are acting and may not even like the products they are using. Second, the length of time it takes for a film to be written, produced, edited and released to the public can easily stretch into several years. This is a very long time for most products and the products featured in the film may not even be on the market when the film is finally released. Finally, in most cases films have a much smaller audience than television.
When implementing movie product placement as a branding tool, it is important to ensure a long product life and predict the film sales before committing marketing dollars. They want their products to be visible within a scene, but not the focus. The product needs to fit, almost seamlessly into the shot and context of the scene. ♦
